The real cost of a refund

A refund returns the price, but many payment processors keep the fee they charged on the original payment, and each refund takes support time. Put that per-refund cost in the last field to see what refunds really cost.

Questions

How do I calculate a refund rate?

Refunds divided by orders in the same period: 10 refunds on 200 orders is 5%.

Do I get the payment fee back when I refund?

Often not: many processors keep the fee on the original payment. Check your processor’s terms.

Is a refund the same as a chargeback?

No. A refund is one you give; a chargeback is forced by the customer’s bank, costs a dispute fee and counts against your dispute rate. See the chargeback rate calculator.

What refund rate is normal?

It varies a lot by product and price. Compare against your own history rather than a general figure.
