Stripe’s documentation says the card processing industry treats dispute activity above 0.75% as excessive (checked 2026-10-23). Card networks run their own monitoring programmes with their own thresholds, and a sudden rise can matter before any threshold: ask your processor what applies to you.

The measure, and the threshold

Dispute activity is disputes received in a period divided by successful payments in the same period; disputes you win count too. Stripe’s documentation (read 23 October 2026) says the card processing industry recognises dispute activity above 0.75% as excessive, and that a sudden spike can lead to monitoring before that. Visa and Mastercard run their own programmes with their own thresholds, so ask your processor which apply to you.

Questions

What is a chargeback rate?

The share of payments that customers disputed with their bank in a period. Processors usually measure disputes received this month against payments this month.

Do won disputes count?

Yes. Every dispute counts toward the rate, which is why prevention matters more than winning.

What happens above 0.75%?

You risk card-network monitoring programmes and fines, and your processor may hold funds or close the account.

How do I lower it?

Clear product descriptions, a recognisable statement descriptor, fast support and easy refunds, and fraud screening.
