Open Graph preview

Type a page’s title, description, image and URL to preview how a shared link will look on Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack and iMessage, on X, and in a Google result, then copy the meta tags.

Where the link points. The domain line on every card comes from it.

0 characters · Google shows about 60, X about 70

0 characters · Google shows about 160

An absolute https URL, 1200 × 630 pixels for a large card. A path like /share.jpg works once the page URL is filled in.

How to use it

  1. Enter the page URL, title and description.
  2. Enter an absolute image URL, ideally 1200 × 630 pixels.
  3. Check the three previews as you type.
  4. Copy the Open Graph and Twitter tags into your page’s head.

Which tag each surface reads

Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, WhatsApp and iMessage read the Open Graph tags — og:title, og:description, og:image and og:url. X reads its own twitter:* tags first and falls back to Open Graph when they are missing, so the block above includes both. Google reads neither for its result: the title comes from <title> and the snippet from the description meta tag or, when Google prefers its own choice, from the page text. That is why the search preview can only be an estimate.

The image is what makes or breaks it

The image is most of what people see of a shared link. Make it 1200 × 630 pixels (1.91:1), under about 5 MB, served over https from an absolute URL — a relative path like /share.jpg works in your HTML but not in a crawler that saw the tag out of context, which is why the generated tag is always absolute. If the previews show no image, the URL you gave could not be loaded from here, and a crawler will fail the same way.

Why this page does not fetch your URL

The previews are built from what you type, not from the live page. Reading a site’s existing tags from here would mean Sellstamp making a request to any address a visitor names, and doing that safely rules out plain http and redirects — which is how a large share of real sites answer. Rather than a checker that fails on ordinary URLs, this is one that shows you what a given set of tags produces. To see what your live page has now, view its source and search for og:; to test what a crawler sees after you deploy, the platforms’ own debuggers (Facebook’s Sharing Debugger, LinkedIn’s Post Inspector) fetch the page and also clear their caches, which nothing else can do.

Questions

What size should an Open Graph image be?

1200 × 630 pixels (1.91:1), served over https from an absolute URL. Facebook, LinkedIn and X all display that ratio well.

Why does my shared link show the old image?

Platforms cache link previews. Facebook’s Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn’s Post Inspector fetch the page again and refresh their cache.

Does X use Open Graph tags?

X reads its own twitter: tags first and falls back to Open Graph when they are missing, so the copied block includes both.

Does Google use Open Graph tags for search results?

Not for the title and snippet: those come from the title tag and the meta description or the page text. Google may use og:image when choosing an image thumbnail.

Why does this not fetch my live page?

Because fetching any address a visitor types from Sellstamp’s server would have to refuse plain http and redirects to be safe, which rules out many real sites. The previews are built from what you type instead.
