Regular expressions
With “Regular expression” ticked, the search is a JavaScript regular expression, and the replacement can use $1, $2 or $<name> for captured groups. Without it, the text is matched literally, and a $ in the replacement is just a dollar sign.
A badly written pattern can take practically forever to run. Each search runs in its own background thread and is stopped after two seconds with a message, so the page never freezes.
Questions
How do I replace only whole words?
Tick “Whole words only”: replacing “cat” then leaves “category” alone.
How do I use a captured group in the replacement?
Tick “Regular expression”, put parentheses around part of the pattern, and write $1 in the replacement.
Why did my pattern stop with a message?
It took longer than two seconds, which usually means catastrophic backtracking from nested quantifiers like (a+)+.
Can I replace line breaks?
Yes, with a regular expression: find \n and replace with what you want.
