What the scores mean

Flesch Reading Ease runs roughly from 0 to 100; higher is easier, and 60 to 70 is plain English. The Flesch–Kincaid grade estimates the US school grade that can follow the text. Both use only two things: words per sentence and syllables per word. They cannot tell whether the text makes sense.

English only, and an estimate

The formulas were made for English, and syllables are counted by a rule of thumb (groups of vowels), which is close for most words but not exact. Treat the scores as a guide for revising, not a grade.

Questions

What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?

60 to 70 is plain English that most adults read easily. Web copy for a general audience often aims for 60 or above.

Does it work for other languages?

No. The formulas are calibrated for English; other languages need their own formulas.

How do I improve the score?

Use shorter sentences and shorter words. The count of sentences over 25 words shows where to start.

Is the syllable count exact?

No. It uses a common rule of thumb that is close for most English words.
