Title case

Every word is capitalised except short words such as a, an, the, and, of and to in the middle of the title, which is the common style of English style guides. The first and last words are always capitalised. Style guides differ on the details, so check a headline against yours.

Code cases

For camelCase, snake_case and the rest, the text is split into words at spaces and punctuation and where a lowercase letter meets a capital, so “XMLHttpRequest” becomes xml_http_request. Accents are dropped (“Ćevapi” becomes cevapi), because identifiers are usually plain ASCII.

Questions

What is sentence case?

Only the first letter of each sentence is a capital; everything else is lowercase. Proper nouns need fixing by hand afterwards.

Which words stay lowercase in title case?

Short articles, conjunctions and prepositions such as a, an, the, and, but, of, on and to, unless they start or end the title.

What is the difference between camelCase and PascalCase?

camelCase starts lowercase (myVariable); PascalCase capitalises the first word too (MyClass).

Does it handle accented letters?

Prose cases keep them. Code cases remove the accents, since identifiers are usually ASCII.
