Protect PDF

Add a password to a PDF with AES-256 encryption, and choose whether it can be printed, copied or edited, all in your browser.

Choose or drop a PDF. It is opened in this tab and never uploaded.

Your file stays on your device

Your browser opens and processes the file itself. It is never uploaded, to Sellstamp or anyone else, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Selling a PDF?

An ebook, a guide or a workbook: Sellstamp gives it a storefront and delivers it automatically the moment someone pays. Open a free store

How to use it

  1. Choose the PDF.
  2. Type the password twice.
  3. Optionally set an owner password and the permissions.
  4. Press “Protect the PDF” and download it.

Your files are not uploaded

The PDF is put together by this browser tab. Your files are read from your device, processed here, and the result is handed back to you as a download. Nothing is sent to Sellstamp or anyone else, so there is no copy on a server to worry about afterwards, and no upload to wait for.

The encryption

AES-256, the strongest encryption the PDF standard defines (PDF 2.0, revision 6). Without the password the content cannot be read. Current PDF readers open it with the password (this tool’s tests check it with pdf.js, the reader built into Firefox); readers from before about 2010 may not.

Permissions are a request, not a lock

The open password protects the content. The print, copy and edit permissions are honoured by well-behaved readers, but a determined person with the open password can remove them. Use them to set expectations, not to protect secrets.

Questions

How strong is the encryption?

AES-256, the strongest the PDF standard supports. The weak part is usually the password: use a long one, from the password generator if you like.

What is the owner password for?

It is needed to change the permissions. If you leave it empty, the open password is used for both.

What if I forget the password?

It cannot be recovered, by this tool or anyone. Keep an unprotected copy somewhere safe.

Is my password sent anywhere?

No. The file is encrypted in your browser and the password never leaves the page.
