Grayscale PDF

Convert a colour PDF to black and white (grayscale) in your browser, for printing without colour ink. Each page is redrawn in shades of grey.

Choose or drop a PDF. It is opened in this tab and never uploaded.

Your file stays on your device

Your browser opens and processes the file itself. It is never uploaded, to Sellstamp or anyone else, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

How to use it

  1. Choose the PDF.
  2. Pick 150 DPI for a smaller file or 300 DPI for print quality.
  3. Press “Make it grayscale” and download it.

Your files are not uploaded

The PDF is put together by this browser tab. Your files are read from your device, processed here, and the result is handed back to you as a download. Nothing is sent to Sellstamp or anyone else, so there is no copy on a server to worry about afterwards, and no upload to wait for.

How it works, and the trade-off

Each page is drawn at the resolution you choose, every pixel is turned into its brightness (the standard Rec. 709 weighting), and the pages are saved as images at their original page size. The result looks right and prints without colour ink, but its text is part of an image: it can no longer be selected, searched or copied.

If you only need to print in grey, your printer’s “grayscale” setting keeps the text as text.

Questions

Why can I no longer select the text?

Each page is redrawn as an image in grey, so its text becomes part of the picture. Keep the original for searching and copying.

Which resolution should I choose?

150 DPI for reading and email, 300 DPI if you will print it.

Will the file get bigger?

Often, for text documents, because pages become images. For photo-heavy documents it can get smaller.

Is there a page limit?

Up to 300 pages at a time. Split a longer PDF first.
