PNG to ICO

Make a real multi-size .ico file from a PNG, with 16, 32, 48 and 256 pixel icons (or the sizes you choose) inside one file. Made in your browser.

A square PNG of 256 pixels or more works best. Never uploaded.

Sizes inside the .ico

Your file stays on your device

Your browser opens and processes the file itself. It is never uploaded, to Sellstamp or anyone else, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Selling images?

Photos, templates, presets or artwork: Sellstamp gives them a storefront and delivers the files automatically after payment. Open a free store

How to use it

  1. Choose a square image, ideally 256 pixels or larger.
  2. Tick the sizes to include.
  3. Make the ICO and download it.

Your images are not uploaded

Your browser opens the image, does the work in this tab, and saves the result back to your device. Nothing is sent to Sellstamp or anyone else, so there is no upload to wait for and no copy on a server afterwards.

What is inside the file

An .ico holds several sizes of the same icon, and Windows and browsers pick the one that fits. Each size here is drawn from your image, centred on transparency if it is not square, and stored as PNG inside the icon, the form Windows has read since Vista and every browser reads.

For a website, a PNG favicon set with the right link tags is the modern approach; the favicon generator makes one. An .ico is still what Windows desktop programs and some older tools expect.

Questions

Which sizes should an ICO contain?

16, 32 and 48 for Windows and browser tabs, and 256 for large icons. More sizes make a larger file but cover more places.

Can I use this as favicon.ico?

Yes. Put it in the root of your site; browsers that request /favicon.ico will find it.

Does my image need to be square?

No, but it looks best if it is. A non-square image is centred on a transparent square.

Will old versions of Windows open it?

Windows Vista and later read PNG-based icons. Windows XP needs older BMP-based icons, which this tool does not write.
