Sales tax and VAT calculator

Add sales tax or VAT to a net price, or take it back out of a gross price, at any rate you type or a preset standard rate.

Common standard rates

Standard rates only, checked September 2026. Reduced, zero and sector rates are not listed because which one applies depends on what you are selling, not on where. EU rates are published by the European Commission; confirm any rate with the relevant tax authority before you invoice on it.

How to use it

  1. Choose “Add tax to a net price” or “Remove tax from a gross price”.
  2. Pick a country’s standard rate from the list, or type any rate.
  3. Enter the amount.
  4. Read the net amount, the tax and the gross amount.

Adding tax, and taking it back out

Adding is the easy direction: 100 at 20% is 120. Removing it is where people slip. The tax inside a 120 gross price at 20% is not 20% of 120 — it is 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100 net, so 20 of tax. Taking 20% off the gross would give 96, which is 4 short and is a real invoice error rather than a rounding one.

These rates are a starting point, not advice

The presets are standard rates as at September 2026. Reduced, zero and sector-specific rates exist nearly everywhere and depend on what you are selling; rates change by legislation, sometimes mid-year; and where you owe tax at all depends on where you and your customer are and on whether you are registered. The rate field accepts anything, which is the honest way to use this page. Confirm with your tax authority or your accountant before invoicing on a number from here.

Sellstamp’s own VAT handling is a different thing entirely: it charges tax only where a merchant has declared a scheme, at the rate for the country the buyer declared, and it does not read this page.

Questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by one plus the rate: 100 at 20% is 100 × 1.20 = 120.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by one plus the rate: 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100 net, so the tax is 20. Taking 20% off 120 would give 96, which is wrong by 4.

Are the preset rates current?

They are standard rates as checked in September 2026. Most countries also have reduced and zero rates, and rates change by law, so confirm the rate for what you sell with your tax authority or accountant before you invoice.

Is sales tax the same as VAT?

Both are added to the price the customer pays, but they are collected differently. US sales tax is charged once, on the final sale, at a state and local rate. VAT is charged at each step of the supply chain, and businesses reclaim what they paid. For a single price the arithmetic is the same.
