# Customer balance > Store credit: a balance a customer spends at your store, from refunds, goodwill credit or a rewards percentage. Page: https://sellstamp.com/docs/orders/customer-balance ## Where credit comes from - **Refunds**: Refund an order to the customer’s balance instead of their card. See [Refunds](https://sellstamp.com/docs/payments/refunds-and-disputes). - **Goodwill**: Add credit from the customer's page, with a reason. You can remove credit the same way. - **Rewards**: A percentage of every paid order paid back as credit. Set it under Store settings → Details. If the order is refunded, the reward is taken back. ## Spending it At checkout, the balance is applied after tax, against the total. It is a way of paying, not a discount, so the invoice and VAT are unchanged. If the balance covers the whole order, no payment method is needed. ## Rules - Credit is spendable only at the store that issued it. There is no platform-wide balance. - If you set an expiry under Store settings → Details, each amount of credit expires on its own date, counted from when it was issued. - A cash refund can never return more than the customer paid in cash. The part paid with credit goes back as credit. - Customers see their balance and its history from their order page and account.
